And so let’s begin by citing two female celebrities who look younger than their age: Cory Quirino, 67, granddaughter of the late President Elpidio Quirino, health-and-fitness TV host, often described as “forever young”; and Alice Dixson, 51, Miss Philippines-International 1986, commercial model and movie actress.
At a dinner party, I noticed a younger-looking madame forking fresh vegetable salad, ignoring the meat delicacies.
She must have listened to Cory and Alice, who recommend fresh fruits and raw vegetables in every meal.
Is it possible to slow down aging by feasting on fresh fruits and vegetables?
I “googled” for an answer.
“Yes,” according to renowned Canadian biologist Dr. David Rollo, whose study was published in the journal Experimental Biology and Medicine.
Rollo has been at work for years on an age-defying “cocktail” of vitamins, herbs, and nutrients that may prolong healthy living in old age.
He has tested his formula on lab mice. They lived 10 percent longer and aged 50 percent slower than the mice not taking the formula.
Dr. Rollo is not focusing on a longer life span though. He’s more interested in living a stronger, “younger” life in old age, arguing that no one wants to live a longer life in a nursing home. But that requires good physical and mental health.
Dr. Rollo has discovered five manifestations of aging that account for most of the tissue, organ, and system dysfunction leading to chronic disease and untimely death. These five are oxidative stress, inflammation, mitochondrial dysfunction, insulin resistance, and integrity of membranes.
“Declining physical activity is one of the biggest signs of aging,” says Dr. Rollo.
His formula consists of a synergistic blend of 30 ingredients, including nutritious fruits and vegetables, that interact with one another to slow down the aging process. Taken individually, the same ingredients have little effect.
His breakthrough comes from understanding how these nutrients work in the body’s mitochondria, the “furnaces within the cells” which give the human body the energy to combat free radicals that hasten aging.
Rollo is so sure of his findings that he’s testing his theory out on himself. In his early 70s, he claims to be fitter and stronger than before, with fewer aches and pains.
A truly healthy person, he believes, has an immune system capable of warding off harmful virus and bacteria.
If his concoction works in a decade of human trials, he would create a capsule that would time-release nutrients into the body at the best moment. He believes that the human body ages differently, depending on the time of day.
Dr. Rollo’s work is gaining the approval of other experts in the field. One of them is Dr. Luigi Fontana, the director of the Division of Nutrition and Aging at the Italian National Institute of Health in Rome.
He has reviewed Dr. Rollo’s work and is convinced that diet can promote healthier aging. In Italy, the average life expectancy is 81 years. But serious health problems often begin at age 50 or 30 years earlier.
“Thirty years,” says Dr. Fontana, “is more than a third of life spent in pain.”
He’s convinced that the correct diet saves healthy lives.
The internet does not reveal most of the specific ingredients that blend into Dr. Rollo’s formula. All that is revealed is that his experimental time-release capsule mixes B vitamins 1, 3, 6, and 12 with vitamins C, D, and E, plus magnesium, selenium, potassium, manganese, cod liver oil, flaxseed oil, ginkgo biloba, ginseng, green tea extract, ginger root extract and garlic.
That looks as easy as A, B, C. Let’s do it ourselves.

BUSINESS SECTOR HAPPY OVER MORE POWER
THE president of More Electric and Power Corp. (MORE Power), Roel Castro, believes that by eliminating illegal “jumpers,” the company could serve the Ilonggos more efficiently at a cheaper cost.
That is the rationale behind the on-going rapid dismantling of illegal connections done by pilferers who resell electricity for a living.
“Money lost to stolen power,” he said, “could have gone a long way in our modernization program.”
The Iloilo Economic Development Foundation (IledF) – an alliance of Iloilo City’s varied business associations initiating economic reforms — agrees that MORE Power’s anti-pilferage operations will fix the city’s power distribution system and render better electricity service.
According to IledF Executive Director Francis Gentoral, Iloilo City’s business community is confident that MORE Power would remain true to its promise to provide transparent service.
This is obviously being done through a Facebook account that informs customers about scheduled and accident-caused brownouts; and steps being taken to restore outages within minutes.
MORE Power has been correcting the current state of disrepair of the city’s electricity distribution system that it took over from the previous franchisee, Panay Electric Co. (PECO).
Despite its being new in the power business, the distribution utility has demonstrated capability, track record, and financial capability to operate and maintain a distribution utility for a fast-growing metropolis.
