Basic good manners and right conduct must be reiterated even to cops from time to time.
Philippine National Police Chief Police General Archie Gamboa recently ordered all police personnel manning the border control checkpoints/Quarantine Control Points (QCPs) to strictly adhere to PNP Ethical Standards.
In a press statement issued on July 10, the Police Regional (PRO)-6 stressed that police personnel must observe courtesy at all times, especially when dealing with women and elderly people.
Police Colonel Gilbert Gorero, PRO-6 spokesperson, said policemen must also refrain from taking photos of private documents.
“They should strictly adhere to the PNP’s ethical standard and good conduct,” he said.
PRO-6 issued the statement after Gamboa reminded officers assigned to quarantine control points (QCPs) or border control checkpoint “to be dignified while discharging police function every day particularly detailed manning checkpoints.”
Police Brigadier General Rene Pamuspusan, Western Visayas police chief, warned that anyone who shows arrogance and disrespect will be dealt with accordingly.
“PRO-6 will not tolerate any misbehavior and disrespect from police officers much more we are in a crisis. Supervisors and commanders will be directly liable for failure of supervision when their subordinates publicly misbehave and disrespect,” he said.
Pamuspusan also encouraged the public to report discourteous and arrogant cops to the nearest police station, the Police Hotlines under PRO6, and RD’s Hotline (09989673651).
While there seemed to be no complaints against PRO-6 officers, PNP personnel in other parts of the country have been under fire for alleged misbehavior.
Police were accused of a rubout after allegedly killing four soldiers in a checkpoint in Jolo, Sulu on June 29.
There was also the case of Fabel Pineda who was allegedly raped by two policemen from San Juan, Ilocos Sur.
She filed her case in a police station at the nearby town of Cabugao but was turned down when she asked for security escort in going home. She was gunned down later.
There was also the case of a policeman who served a warrant while pretending to be an LBC courier.
