Contrabands seized in two BJMP facilities

BACOLOD City – The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) confiscated several contrabands during greyhound operations in two jail facilities here and in Negros Occidental last Tuesday.

Atty. Jairus Anthony Dogelio, spokesperson of BJMP-6, said that most of the contrabands seized were improvised weapons and other materials used in the livelihood projects of persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) inside the jail.

Dogelio said that no cellular phones were confiscated in Metro Bacolod District Jail (MBDJ) male and female dormitories in Barangay Handumanan here, and Negros Occidental District Jail (NODJ) in Bago City.

Dogelio said that 48 PDLs and 12 jail personnel at the Handumanan jail tested negative in the random drug test.

He said the BJMP prioritized the drug testing at MBDJ- male dormitory annex in Barangay Singcang-Airport here last Monday. Thus, there were only limited kits available for Handumanan jail.

However, Dogelio said the BJMP regularly and randomly conducts drug testing, as well as greyhound operations every year.

The Barangay Singcang-Airport jail was prioritized after the local police accused them of alleged mismanagement, following revelations from two arrested drug suspects about their alleged contacts in illegal drug transaction inside the jail.

While they do not discount the veracity of the report, the BJMP-6 has already started an investigation on the matter.

Three cellular phones were confiscated from Singcang-Airport jail during Monday’s greyhound operation, and the PDLs who own the phones will be subjected for investigation, according to Dogelio.
