Concrete River Wall Shields Talisay City from Floods

Flood-prone areas in Barangay Matab-ang, Talisay City, Negros Occidental, are now protected by a newly built flood control structure along the Matab-ang River, completed by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

The PHP 47-million project, undertaken by the DPWH Negros Occidental 1st District Engineering Office, aims to safeguard residents from flooding caused by typhoons or heavy rains.

The project involved constructing 870 linear meters of flood control walls using stone masonry.

According to Regional Director Sanny Boy O. Oropel, the flood control structure will reduce water runoff not only from the Matab-ang River but also from the Banago and Logoy rivers.

“This flood control structure will serve as a conduit connecting the waters of the Banago and Logoy rivers, helping mitigate the risks of flooding,” Oropel said.

Oropel added that the structure will protect communities by reducing flood damage to homes, businesses, infrastructure, and other assets, ultimately minimizing economic losses and providing soil protection along riverbanks.

District Engineer Dene B. Baldonado Jr. emphasized the structure’s importance in managing water flow and minimizing flood impacts during heavy rains or calamities.

“This structure is vital for protecting lives and property, managing water resources, ensuring economic stability, and addressing climate change challenges,” Baldonado said. (DPWH)
