CLFI commemorates International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction with Tulong sa Pagbangon response in Quezon City

In commemoration of the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction on October 13, 2026, Cebuana Lhuillier Foundation Inc. (CLFI) reaffirmed its commitment to building safer and more resilient communities by extending immediate assistance to 300 families affected by a recent fire in Barangay Central, Quezon City.
It was a work-from-home Tuesday, October 6, when the sound of extremely loud sirens heard from our balcony drew my attention to an unfolding emergency. Later, I learned that a fire had broken out and quickly escalated to the fifth alarm as flames spread through a densely built residential area where many houses were made of light materials. Heavy rain, thunder, and lightning further compounded the ordeal of families who had lost their homes and belongings. Subsequent public reports indicated that 80 houses were completely destroyed by the fire.
Responding to the urgent needs of the community, CLFI mobilized its Tulong sa Pagbangon (TSP) program under its Disaster Resilience pillar and distributed essential relief packs to 300 families. The assistance was intended to help displaced residents meet their immediate needs and regain a measure of security and dignity as they began the difficult process of recovery.
Tulong sa Pagbangon reflects CLFI’s commitment to strengthening community resilience through timely humanitarian assistance, preparedness, and sustained collaboration. More than the distribution of relief goods, the program embodies solidarity with families facing the loss of their homes, livelihoods, and sense of safety while helping them take the first steps toward rebuilding.
“When disaster strikes, families can lose in a matter of minutes what they worked years to build. In such moments, we cannot remain bystanders. We must respond with urgency, compassion, and a firm resolve to help communities rise again,” said Jean Henri Lhuillier, President and CEO of Cebuana Lhuillier. “Through Tulong sa Pagbangon, we stand beside affected families not only to provide immediate relief, but also to remind them that they are not alone. Resilience is strengthened when government, the private sector, and communities act together—protecting lives, restoring dignity, and giving people renewed hope and the courage to rebuild.”
CLFI’s response gives concrete meaning to the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction by turning commemoration into action. Through its Disaster Resilience pillar, the foundation continues to advance preparedness, partnership, and compassionate response so that at-risk communities are better supported before, during, and after emergencies.
