City’s proposed butterfly garden up for DENR’S nod

The proposed Iloilo City Butterfly Garden has been presented to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR)-6 for approval.

The Regional Wildlife Management Committee (RWMC) is set to conduct ocular inspection at La Paz Plaza Nov. 6 to back up its deliberation of City Hall’s application for Wildlife Farm Permit.

Mayor Jerry P. Treñas said the initiative is part of revitalizing plazas as open spaces for public, and places for people to enjoy.

City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) head Engr. Noel Hechanova laid down before RWMC virtual meeting Nov. 4 the plans for 270-sqm butterfly farm.

It will feature a garden with some 24 food plants and four common species of butterflies.

“The site is accessible and not polluted. It will offer viewing for visitors especially children,” Hechanova said.

Arch. Regina Gregorio of City Engineer’s Office said the area identified is adjacent to the gym.

Civil society representatives, led by First Lady Rosalie Treñas, and Central Philippine University College of Arts and Sciences Dean Dr. Stella G. Fernandez as consultant, have been tapped to help establish the project. (Iloilo City PIO)
