BACOLOD CITY – Police are investigating a gun attack that killed a Chinese national and wounded his alleged Chinese business partner, reportedly carried out by the brother of one of the victims inside their establishment compound in Barangay Bubog, Talisay City, Negros Occidental, on Friday.
Authorities withheld the names of the 59-year-old fatality, the 30-year-old wounded victim, and the 51-year-old suspect.
Police Major Rhazl Jim Jocson, deputy chief of Talisay City Police Station, said the suspect arrived at the compound early that day and was confronted by his younger brother.
They were talking when a gunshot was heard at around 11:30 a.m.
The 59-year-old victim was shot in the head and was declared dead at a hospital.
Upon hearing the gunshot, the 30-year-old victim stepped out of the office to check the commotion but encountered the fleeing suspect.
The suspect then shot him, hitting him in the chest. The wounded victim is recovering at a hospital.
Jocson said the suspect was arrested after a brief chase, as police quickly responded to a report from a concerned citizen while setting up a checkpoint nearby.
Authorities recovered from the suspect a 9mm caliber firearm and an empty shell.
In January 2025, the older victim and the suspect met at the barangay hall to settle an undisclosed dispute, and the suspect was later barred from entering their business premises.
However, Jocson said it remains unclear what triggered the suspect to commit the crime against his brother.
Police are investigating whether the motive was business-related or stemmed from a personal dispute.
Jocson said the suspect may face murder and frustrated murder charges.
