China Open: Gauff outlasts Chinese foe, books Round of 16 ticket
By Leobert Julian A. de la Peña

Coco Gauff’s China Open title dream is still alive after sweeping home bet Sun Xinran, 7-5, 6-1, to march into the Round of 16 of the WTA 1000 tournament on Oct. 5, 2026, at the National Tennis Center in Beijing.
Fresh off a three-set slugfest against Camila Osorio, Gauff rode her momentum and took down Sun with a combination of tactical outplay and a gap in serving consistency.
Gauff was off to a hot start after securing an early break, racing to a 3-1 lead after holding serve on a dominant 40-15 outburst in the third game.
Just when the American star thought that a one-sided frame was up for grabs, the 16-year-old Chinese ace doubled down on her baseline adjustment, eventually finding a way to neutralize Gauff’s heavy topspin with deep and flat groundstrokes.
Sun’s pivotal strategy tweak took a toll on Gauff’s baseline positioning, and she was forced to stay behind the no-man’s land.
With the powerful and flat forehands Sun deployed, the match turned into a mano-a-mano affair after a late break, helping Sun retake the driver’s seat with a 5-4 advantage.
Unfortunately, the more experienced Gauff cracked Sun’s flat strokes by changing angles on her backhand returns, which completely changed the complexion of the game.
After Gauff figured out how to move away from the baseline because of the flat balls she was receiving, it was Sun who found herself in the same situation in the final three games, as the backhand turnarounds made it difficult for her to stay behind, forcing her to move up to the net and pick up short balls in the midcourt.
The tactical shift favored Gauff as the world No. 4 closed the opening set with a 3-1 run, drawing first blood in nearly an hour of intense back-and-forth.
It was then all Gauff in the second set as Sun was visibly gassed, trying to catch up with different points of attack from the wide side and the lethal use of timely drop shots.
Sun was limited to a single game in the second set and was completely undone by her inconsistent second serves.
Every time the Chinese prodigy sent out a sloppy second serve, Gauff didn’t think twice and moved a step forward to score several return winners.
With the win, Gauff now moves to the Round of 16, where she will face Belgian challenger Elise Mertens, who earlier survived Jelena Ostapenko, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.
