The Community Environment and Natural Resources Office of Kabankalan City celebrated the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem on July 16, 2025, at Sitio Mag-ambak, Barangay Linaon, Cauayan, Negros Occidental.
The activity was joined by forest protection officers and contract service staff under the leadership of CENR Officer Wilfredo P. Canto.
The day’s highlight was the planting of bakhawan propagules, a vital step in mangrove reforestation efforts.
Participants also carried out a cleanup drive, removing debris such as plastic waste lodged in the roots and branches of mangrove trees in the area.
In addition to the restoration activity, an information, education, and communication session was held to emphasize the importance of mangrove ecosystems.
Through collaborative sharing and the presentation of key ideas, participants explored the ecological benefits of mangroves and discussed actionable ways to protect them for future generations.
“Mangrove forests are indispensable natural barriers, safeguarding our coastlines from severe weather events and mitigating erosion,” said CENR Officer Wilfredo P. Canto.
“They provide vital protection for communities vulnerable to storms and rising sea levels. Our collective efforts today are a testament to our commitment to preserve these critical ecosystems, ensuring a more resilient and sustainable future for Negros Occidental,” he added.
The International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem is observed annually on July 26, established by UNESCO in 2015.
This global observance raises awareness on the importance of mangroves and promotes their sustainable management worldwide. (DENR-6)
