Collaborative efforts toward environmental stewardship can bring positive societal change, including cleaner surroundings and the restoration of natural resources.
In celebration of World Wetlands Day 2026, with the theme “Wetlands and Traditional Knowledge: Celebrating Cultural Heritage,” the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) in Boracay, together with partner agencies and volunteers, conducted a simultaneous cleanup at the Boracay wetlands.
Cleanup sites included Wetland No. 1 in Barangay Yapak, wetlands 2 and 4 in Barangay Balabag, and wetlands 6, 7, 8 and 9 in Barangay Manocmanoc.
A total of 115 participants joined the effort, including personnel from the Malay Philippine National Police, Philippine Coast Guard, 52nd Air Force Group Reserve, MABOVEN Inc., the provincial local government unit of Malay, Cagban Jetty Port, the local government unit, and street cleaners from the LGU and PLGU.
Organizers said more than 70 sacks of garbage were collected in the areas covered during the cleanup.
Most of the collected waste was residual waste, or garbage that cannot be recycled, reused or composted.
World Wetlands Day is observed annually on Feb. 2 to mark the adoption of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, a global agreement that promotes the conservation and wise use of wetlands.
Wetlands, including those in Boracay, help manage flooding by absorbing excess water, support biodiversity and improve water quality, making regular cleanup and protection efforts important for both communities and tourism areas. (DENR-6)
