Olympic champion Carlos Yulo clinched the bronze medal in the men’s individual all-around event at the 2025 Artistic Gymnastics Asian Championships, marking a strong return to competition following his double gold triumph at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Yulo finished third overall with a total score of 83.633, trailing Japan’s Oka Shinnosuke, who won gold with 85.134 points, and Hasegawa Tsuyoshi, who took silver with 83.967 points.
“I’m happy with the result,” Yulo said after the event. “It’s been a while since I competed, so this gives me confidence heading into the apparatus finals.”
The competition was held in Jecheon, South Korea, and serves as a key continental event leading to the 2025 World Championships.
Yulo’s best event was the floor exercise, where he registered the highest score at 14.433.
He also impressed on the vault with 14.500 and 14.300 on his two attempts, followed by strong performances on the parallel bars (14.167), horizontal bar (13.800), rings (13.633), and pommel horse (13.100).
This all-around showing continues Yulo’s dominant legacy in Asian gymnastics.
He was the defending champion, having won four gold medals in the 2024 Asian Championships, including the individual all-around, floor exercise, vault, and parallel bars.
Though the Philippine team missed the podium in the team event—where Japan secured gold, China silver, and Kazakhstan bronze—Yulo’s medal keeps the country’s hopes alive for further honors in the individual apparatus finals set for June 7 to 8.
Joining Yulo in representing the Philippines are Juancho Miguel Besana, John Ivan Cruz, Justine Ace De Leon, and Jhon Romeo Santillan, all competing in various categories of the senior men’s division.
The 2025 Asian Championships is seen as an important stepping stone for athletes aiming to qualify or prepare for the next Olympic cycle and international tournaments.
Yulo, now 25, continues to serve as the Philippines’ top male gymnast and one of Asia’s most decorated athletes in the sport.
His performance in Jecheon reflects a focused return to elite form just months after his historic Paris campaign.
The Gymnastics Association of the Philippines expressed optimism over Yulo’s prospects this weekend, particularly in the floor and vault events where he has consistently delivered world-class routines.
“We’re proud of Caloy’s performance,” said GAP president Cynthia Carrion. “This bronze proves he remains among Asia’s best, and we look forward to seeing him on the podium again in the finals.”
