The Municipality of Carles has ordered the temporary closure of Tangke Lagoon in Barangay Gabi, Gigantes Sur, from Sept. 1 to 30, 2025.
Mayor Arnold T. Betita II issued Executive Order No. 94, citing the need to preserve the lagoon’s natural beauty, environmental integrity, and biodiversity.
The order also aims to ensure the safety of tourists during the southwest monsoon season, when strong waves pose risks at the lagoon’s entrance.
Tangke, a well-known saltwater lagoon and top tourist attraction in Carles, is recognized for its scenic appeal and socio-cultural and economic value.
Under Section 444, Paragraph 2(vii) of Republic Act 7160, or the Local Government Code of 1991, local governments are mandated to implement measures for the conservation and protection of land, marine, and forest resources.
The Carles Tourism Office clarified that other tourist destinations in the municipality will remain open during the temporary closure.
