Canlaon approves land use for new BJMP jail

BACOLOD CITY — A new Bureau of Jail Management and Penology facility will rise in Canlaon City, Negros Oriental, after the city government approved the bureau’s use of an identified property.

Mayor Jose Chubasco Cardenas and Jail Chief Supt. Brendan Fulgencio, director of the BJMP-Negros Island Region, formally entered into a deed of usufruct during a ceremonial signing Tuesday.

The agreement is intended to support the improvement of correctional facilities and strengthen institutional partnerships.

The development reinforces the government’s commitment to providing a secure, functional, and sustainable facility for persons deprived of liberty while supporting the operational needs of jail personnel.

Officials also visited the property after the signing ceremony to inspect and assess the future site of the new Canlaon City Jail.

The inspection sought to determine whether the proposed location is suitable for the development of a modern, secure, and humane correctional facility.

The BJMP-NIR vowed to continue promoting responsive governance and strengthening partnerships to improve jail management and public service.

The BJMP is responsible for directing, supervising, and controlling the administration and operation of district, city, and municipal jails nationwide, including the safekeeping and development of persons deprived of liberty. (⁠bjmp.gov.ph)
