Cabatuan students win robotics award in Malaysia

ILOILO CITY – Two Grade 12 students of Cabatuan National Comprehensive High School earned an Excellence Award at the World Robot Contest 2026 Malaysia Championship.
Edmerl Chris Tiongson and Kenaz Shem Quiñanola received the award in the Upper Secondary Category of the Super AI Super Track Competition held Aug. 29 and 30 at Dewan Seri Sarjana, Universiti Tenaga Nasional, in Kajang, Malaysia.
The two represented the Philippines in the Upper Secondary division.
Coaches Daniel Ferro and Ray-Ann Legario accompanied them.
Tiongson and Quiñanola qualified for the international competition after finishing as second runner-up in the TechQuest National Robotics Challenge for Academia in Makati City earlier this year.
The top three teams in the national competition were assigned to represent the Philippines in separate international robotics competitions.
The champion was sent to China, the first runner-up to Thailand, and the second runner-up to Malaysia.
The Excellence Award recognizes teams that demonstrate outstanding technical design, problem-solving skills, and teamwork during the competition.
The school, a public high school in the town of Cabatuan in central Iloilo, also received the Multiply the Good Award at the national competition for an entry highlighting the influence of robotics on the students’ lives and aspirations.
The Super AI Super Track tests participants’ skills in robotics programming and autonomous operation.
Teams program and troubleshoot their robots as the machines navigate the competition field and accomplish designated missions within prescribed conditions and time limits.
Established in 2015, the World Robot Contest brings together young robotics competitors from different countries and regions through selection competitions, championships, and finals.
The Malaysia recognition followed the pair’s podium finish at the national level.
