The Police Regional Office-6 announced over the weekend the enforcement of an eight-day gun ban on Boracay Island in Malay, Aklan in connection with security preparations for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Summit and related meetings.
The temporary suspension of the Permit to Carry Firearms Outside of Residence took effect from 12:01 a.m. on March 21 until 11:59 p.m. on March 28, 2026.
Under the order, members of the Philippine National Police, the Armed Forces of the Philippines, and other law enforcement agencies performing official duties and wearing agency-prescribed uniforms are authorized to carry firearms during the period.
The ASEAN Summit is one of the most significant diplomatic gatherings in Southeast Asia, bringing together heads of state and government officials from the 10-member bloc to discuss regional security, economic cooperation, and political affairs. The Philippines assumed the ASEAN chairmanship for 2026.
In an advisory, PRO-6 said the suspension aims to ensure public safety and maintain peace and order during the international event, which is expected to draw dignitaries from several countries.
“We seek the public’s understanding and cooperation as we work together to make ASEAN 2026 safe and secure,” the PNP advisory stated.
In case of emergencies, suspicious activities, or imminent threats to safety, the public is asked to immediately report to the nearest police station, dial 911, or contact the PRO-6 regional hotline at 0998-598-6101, the Aklan Provincial Police Office at 0998-598-6108, or the Boracay Municipal Police Station at 0998-598-6122.
Last month, the PNP also enforced a 10-day gun ban in Iloilo City for the ASEAN activities in the area.
