BACOLOD City – The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) in Negros Occidental has initiated an alternative way to help persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) in their livelihood projects.
Atty. Jairus Anthony Dogelio, spokesperson of BJMP-6, said the BJMP in the province, through its personnel, started to sell hand-made products of the PDLs online in July this year to help them earn.
The products were handcrafted by the PDLs through the knowledge and skills they have acquired in various skills, training, and workshop initiated by the BJMP.
While visitation is still restricted in jails due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, Dogelio said the BJMP thought of a way to help the PDLs reach a wide audience to sell their products.
This is also the jail’s way to showcase the products not only on a provincial scope but as well as on the national, and possibly international scope.
Aside from the online selling, the BJMP here has also displayed some of the products at the vicinity to enable passersby to check the items for sale.
Dogelio said the BJMP in Panay also started following such good initiative for the livelihood of the PDLs.
The proceeds are then given to the PDLs that could help their families, he added.
