A comprehensive biography chronicling the life and legacy of the late Antique Gov. Evelio Javier is in development, with its release scheduled for his 40th death anniversary next year.
The project is led by independent publisher Good Intentions Books and aims to reintroduce Javier’s legacy to a new generation of Filipinos.
The Antique provincial government said the book will explore Javier’s rise as the country’s youngest governor at age 28 in 1971 and his outspoken opposition to the dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos.
The publishing team, led by executive editor Angelo “Sarge” Lacuesta, writer Agatha Buensalida, and project manager Therese Atienza, visited Antique in early July to begin historical and on-ground research.
A key site in their research is the Evelio B. Javier Mini Museum in San Jose de Buenavista, which displays memorabilia and exhibits honoring the former governor.
Nearby stands the Evelio B. Javier Freedom Park, the exact site where he was gunned down on Feb. 11, 1986, while monitoring the vote count during the snap presidential election.
The park features a historical marker installed by the National Historical Institute in 2006, recognizing his heroism and the site’s national significance.
Javier’s assassination, which occurred days before the People Power Revolution, underscored the brutality of the Marcos regime and helped spark the peaceful uprising held from Feb. 22 to 25, 1986.
“The big question in our mind also: How can somebody here in Antique, which is so far from Manila, cause so much change? The change and impact were nationwide,” said Lacuesta.
Javier’s death is commemorated each year through a special holiday observed across Panay Island.
Lacuesta added that while the People Power Revolution remains a powerful memory, Javier’s name is slowly fading from public awareness.
“You cannot have a statue of someone and not know who he was or why he mattered,” he said.
The biography is being driven by Gideon Javier, son of the late governor, who initially pitched the concept to Ateneo Press before it was passed on to Good Intentions Books.
“More than being about him (Evelio Javier), this is about Antique and the kind of leadership it once had,” Lacuesta said.
While Javier is widely remembered as a martyr for democracy, the book will also examine his formative years, values, achievements in public service, and his education at Ateneo de Manila University and Harvard University, where he earned his law degree.
His nephew, Paolo Javier, currently serves as governor of Antique.
Paolo’s victory in the 2025 elections marked the family’s return to the gubernatorial post for the first time since 2015.
