BACOLOD CITY — As his term nears its end, Mayor Alfredo “Albee” Benitez reaffirmed his commitment to public safety and urban development by pledging to build ideal, modern police stations across Bacolod.
Benitez, who is set to become the city’s lone congressional representative, envisions a transformed and secure Bacolod ready to become a “super city.”
During a thanksgiving visit to the Bacolod City Police Office on Monday, Benitez was welcomed with arrival honors led by Police Col. Joeresty Coronica, BCPO director, and attended by Police Brig. Gen. Arnold Thomas Ibay, regional director of the Police Regional Office–Negros Island Region.
The event took place two weeks before the end of Benitez’s mayoral term on June 30.
In his remarks, Benitez stressed that police stations should not exist merely for presence but must be strategically located and well-equipped.
“We must put up stations in ideal locations, with proper facilities, strong infrastructure and the most capable personnel,” he said.
He cited the ongoing construction of Police Station 3 in Barangay Mandalagan as an example, describing it as “one of the most beautiful police stations not just in Bacolod, but in the entire Western Visayas.”
The city broke ground last week on the standard three-story station, a PHP20 million project funded by Rockwell Land Corp. and Sen. Francis Tolentino.
“This is just the beginning,” Benitez said.
“If our policemen have the facilities, equipment and support they need, they will do their job well—and we’ll have a peaceful, orderly city.”
As Bacolod advances toward “super city” status, Benitez said law enforcement must meet the same high standard.
“I will not rest until that vision has been realized,” he said.
“That is my commitment.”
Benitez will switch roles with outgoing Rep. Greg Gasataya, who is completing his final term in Congress.
“My philosophy has always been: if we take care of our enforcement agencies—the people who go out every day to serve and protect—then we are investing in the peace and order of our city,” Benitez said.
He added that when law enforcers are well-equipped and supported, they are more willing to risk their lives for public safety.
“It’s only right that the local government provides them not just assistance, but the recognition and resources they deserve,” he said.
Benitez expressed gratitude for the honors he received.
“Thank you,” he said.
“I was surprised and truly touched by this honor—it’s the first time for me to experience this.”
Addressing the police, he said their dedication symbolizes Bacolod’s potential.
“With strong leadership from the city police force, we can reach even greater heights,” he said.
“This is just the first step in our journey to becoming the next super city in the Philippines.”
Coronica thanked Benitez and the city government for their steadfast support and continued partnership.
He said the city donated equipment and facilities valued at PHP111,965,932.59 to the BCPO.
This substantial contribution, he said, directly boosted their capability to serve and maintain peace and order.
“Today is not only a moment of thanksgiving but also a fitting opportunity to celebrate the fruitful collaboration we have shared with your good office,” Coronica said.
He added that under Benitez’s leadership, Bacolod experienced innovation and people-centered governance that empowered the police force to serve more efficiently.
“You have not only inspired us through your strategic programs but, more importantly, through your sincere compassion for the men and women in uniform,” Coronica said.
