BACOLOD CITY – Mayor Alfredo “Albee” Benitez has directed the Bacolod City Police Office (BCPO) to conduct an intensive investigation into the death of a five-year-old girl in Barangay Handumanan.
“If foul play is confirmed, we will ensure that those responsible face the full force of the law,” Benitez said in a statement after the victim’s decomposing body was found in a creek on Saturday. The girl had been missing since Dec. 21.
The mayor described the incident as a heartbreaking and unacceptable tragedy for the community.
“There will be no leniency, no delays, and no tolerance for those who harm our children,” he said, assuring the public that the city government has taken immediate action.
Benitez also shouldered the airfare for the victim’s mother and sibling, allowing them to travel from Manila to Bacolod on Saturday night.
The city is coordinating with barangay officials to provide the family with burial arrangements and comprehensive support.
The mayor emphasized that this tragedy serves as a painful reminder of the need for constant vigilance to protect children.
“To every resident of Bacolod: I urge you to remain vigilant and proactive,” he said.
Benitez vowed that the city government will work tirelessly to build a community where such heinous acts have no place.
“Let us stand united in this fight to protect our children, our families, and our city,” he added.
Police Capt. Sherwin Galupar, head of Police Station 10, reported that the victim was last seen by a neighbor on Dec. 21 passing by a store. The child’s aunt and sibling, who were asleep at the time, did not notice she had left the house.
The victim’s sibling identified her through her clothing. An autopsy is underway to determine the cause of death, Galupar said, adding that it is too early to speculate on the circumstances.
