When an investment opportunity sounds too good to be true, it’s probably a scam.
Unfortunately, spotting scams has become more difficult as fraudulent schemes grow more sophisticated.
To help Filipinos protect themselves, the Securities and Exchange Commission and BDO Foundation have partnered on a financial education initiative.
The two organizations recently released two entertaining and educational videos titled “Check with SEC” and “Legit Investments? It’s a Date.”
The videos highlight common red flags, teach viewers the right questions to ask, and explain how to verify business credentials with the SEC.
“BDO Foundation, being a staunch advocate of financial education, also believes in the importance of investor protection,” said BDO Foundation President Mario Deriquito.
“This shared project not only helps prevent Filipinos from falling victim to investment scams but also builds and restores confidence in legitimate investment opportunities.”
“Doble o higit pa buwan-buwan na kita… Malamang scam ’yan!”
One of the best ways to spot investment scams is to ask the right questions and carefully evaluate the answers.
In “Check with SEC,” viewers learn about common warning signs such as guaranteed high returns, monthly income doubling schemes, recruitment-based incentives, and fund transfers to personal accounts.
These are just some of the tactics scammers use to lure people into giving away their hard-earned money.
Many of these offers promise unusually high returns that can entice unsuspecting individuals to invest without proper verification.
In “Legit Investments? It’s a Date,” viewers follow Aldea as she investigates three investment prospects.
She chooses wisely by understanding her role as an investor, asking for the right documents, and learning more about each business.
The video emphasizes that being SEC-registered does not automatically mean a business is authorized to sell investment products.
Key documents to request include a permit to sell or offer securities, order of registration, prospectus, and a valid salesman certificate.
The videos are available on the SEC’s Facebook page and will soon be shared across other SEC and partner platforms.
They are also part of BDO Foundation’s YouTube playlist and will be used in training seminars and on-the-ground campaigns.
