ROXAS CITY, Capiz — Baskog Radyo broadcasters Jay and India Lavapiez voluntarily surrendered to police Wednesday afternoon, July 15, after learning that warrants had been issued for their arrest in separate estafa cases.
Police Lt. Col. Rogelio Tomagtang Jr., chief of the Roxas City Police Station, confirmed that the couple went to the station after learning of the warrants.
Metropolitan Trial Court Branch 78 in Parañaque City issued the warrants on June 29.
Tomagtang said the couple told him they were surprised to learn of the warrants because they believed they had already posted bail in the estafa case.
Police verification showed that the warrants involved separate, newly filed estafa cases.
The couple immediately acted on the warrants and each posted PHP 18,000 bail for temporary release.
Baskog Radyo also confirmed the issuance of the warrants in a public statement.
In a separate case, the Capiz Office of the Provincial Prosecutor recently found probable cause to file cyberlibel charges against India Obera-Lavapiez.
Assistant Provincial Prosecutor Cherie Lyn Villa issued a 36-page joint resolution covering NPS Docket Nos. VI-06-INV-26C-00103 and VI-06-INV-26C-00104.
Villa said Lavapiez’s radio broadcasts and Facebook livestreams subjected former Sigma Councilor Cindy Grace Bermejo-Francisco to repeated personal attacks and accusations.
Jay Lavapiez, Baskog Radyo’s station manager, also survived a shooting attack by two unidentified assailants while on his way to the radio station on June 22.
Lavapiez was driving in Barangay Cagay, Roxas City, when gunmen allegedly fired at his vehicle at about 5:40 a.m.
Police said they had identified persons of interest in the attack.
Media organizations, including the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines, condemned the shooting and called for a swift investigation.
Roxas City officials also denounced the attack.
