Basketball referee nabbed with gun, drugs in Pontevedra

ROXAS CITY, Capiz — A basketball referee was arrested Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 23, for allegedly possessing an unlicensed firearm and suspected illegal drugs while walking along a road in Sitio Bungyod, Barangay Binuntucan, Pontevedra, Capiz.
The Pontevedra Municipal Police Station identified the suspect as alias “Bart,” 40, of Barangay Agbanog, Pontevedra.
Police said they received information from a concerned citizen that a man was roaming Sitio Bungyod while carrying an unidentified firearm.
Personnel from the Pontevedra Municipal Police Station, led by Capt. Maria Fe T. Umiten, responded to verify the report and later apprehended the suspect.
Police said they recovered a .38-caliber revolver with no serial number and five live rounds in its cylinder.
Umiten said the suspect failed to present documents authorizing possession or carrying of the firearm.
Police also recovered a brown sling bag, an empty plastic box and three heat-sealed transparent plastic sachets of suspected shabu weighing 5 grams, with a standard drug price of PHP 34,000.
The suspect is under the custody of the Pontevedra Municipal Police Station, along with the confiscated items.
Charges for violating Republic Act 10591, or the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act, and Republic Act 9165, or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002, will be filed against him.
