Thousands of devotees, pilgrims, and tourists gathered in Barotac Viejo on Good Friday, April 3, 2026, as the town staged the 50th year of its Taltal, a reenactment of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ that has become one of Western Visayas’ enduring Lenten traditions.
First staged in 1976, the Taltal has grown from a small, community-based religious expression into a major annual event that draws large crowds from across the region.
This year’s golden milestone marks five decades of sustained devotion and cultural significance.
Held at the Mount of Calvary in Sitio Pal-ac, Poblacion, the reenactment depicts key moments of Christ’s Passion, from his trial and carrying of the cross to the crucifixion.
Local residents portray biblical characters and Roman soldiers, bringing the narrative to life in a solemn, community-led performance.
Municipal Mayor Nielo Tupas said preparations for the 50th year began months in advance to ensure a safe, solemn, and meaningful experience, with medical teams and volunteers deployed on-site.
“We hold the Taltal every year, but this one is extra special as we mark its 50th year. This is a live reenactment of the Passion of Christ, and as much as possible, we aim to portray it faithfully,” he said.
Despite the intense summer heat, crowds stayed throughout the ritual. Many attended as part of their Lenten devotion or in fulfillment of personal vows. Others were drawn by cultural interest.
Tupas added that the milestone reflects the town’s enduring faith and unity. He also stressed the importance of preserving the Taltal as a living heritage.
