SEVILLE, Spain – Jules Kounde fired a stunning goal in extra time to lift Barcelona to a 3-2 victory over Real Madrid and secure the Copa del Rey title Saturday at La Cartuja Stadium.
Barcelona captured a record-extending 32nd Spanish Cup crown as Kounde rifled a low shot into the bottom corner from 25 yards in the 116th minute, sending the club’s supporters into raptures.
The final ended in controversy as Real Madrid’s Antonio Ruediger and Lucas Vazquez were both shown red cards from the bench for dissent, while Jude Bellingham was dismissed after the final whistle for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Pedri opened the scoring for Barcelona in the 28th minute, curling a brilliant strike from outside the box into the top corner during a dominant first-half display.
Real Madrid found their rhythm in the second half as Kylian Mbappe, still regaining full fitness from an ankle injury, came off the bench and equalized with a low free kick in the 70th minute.
Seven minutes later, Aurelien Tchouameni gave Real Madrid the lead with a towering header off a corner kick, shifting momentum towards the reigning LaLiga champions.
Barcelona fought back with a swift counterattack, capped by Ferran Torres’ equalizer in the 84th minute, forcing the match into extra time.
Just as a penalty shootout loomed, Kounde produced a moment of brilliance to secure the dramatic win for the Catalan side.
“It was a good time to give the fans something to cheer about,” Torres told TVE post-match.
“Let’s enjoy it, but don’t overdo it because the Champions League semi-finals are coming up in a few days,” he added.
Torres, named player of the match, reflected on the battle’s intensity, saying, “Happy and tired. Without a doubt, it was the most physically demanding game I’ve played in my life.”
“But we’re a great team who never gives up,” Torres said.
“It tastes better that way, especially when it’s Real Madrid in front of us,” he added, highlighting the special nature of the triumph.
Saturday’s final was marred by ill-tempered moments fueled by Real Madrid’s boycott of pre-match activities to protest Spanish FA refereeing decisions.
Referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea, who had delivered an emotional pre-match press conference Friday, faced immense pressure throughout the fiery encounter.
One major call involved an added-time penalty awarded to Barcelona but later overturned after a lengthy VAR review.
Barcelona nearly doubled their lead before halftime when Torres struck the post with a header in a first half they dominated.
Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti introduced Mbappe in place of Rodrygo to spark a revival, and the Frenchman’s injection of pace and creativity changed the game.
Vinicius Jr. also created opportunities, but Barcelona goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny made critical saves to keep his side alive.
Mbappe’s equalizer put Barcelona on the defensive, but Torres’ late strike reignited their hopes and brought the game back into balance.
Under German manager Hansi Flick, Barcelona capped an extraordinary night by adding the Copa del Rey to their list of pursuits, with LaLiga and the UEFA Champions League titles still within reach.
For Real Madrid, the defeat left LaLiga as their sole remaining hope of avoiding a trophy-less season.
