BACOLOD CITY – Barangay 13 Captain Tanya Familiaran officially stepped down from her post effective June 9.
The resignation was confirmed by Department of the Interior and Local Government-Bacolod Director Christian Nagaynay in a media interview Wednesday, prior to Mayor Alfredo “Albee” Benitez’s State of the City Address at the Bacolod City Government Center.
Nagaynay said the DILG received Familiaran’s resignation letter on June 20, citing personal reasons.
She is the daughter-in-law of outgoing Vice Mayor El Cid Familiaran.
“We respect her decision,” Nagaynay said.
Following her resignation, the DILG coordinated with barangay officials to ensure uninterrupted public services.
“We acted swiftly to prevent any leadership vacuum,” he added.
The highest-ranking barangay councilor, Kagawad Cecilia Chavez, automatically assumed the role of barangay captain as part of the standard succession process.
The DILG will also schedule support measures for the barangay to aid the transition.
Nagaynay said the barangay council must pass a resolution recommending a replacement for Chavez’s vacated councilor seat, which the city mayor will appoint.
“It’s not an urgent matter,” he clarified.
“The council can still function as long as there is a quorum,” he added.
Chavez, emotional in a media interview, pledged support for her constituents.
“Kung gapamati lang siya, indi ko pagpabay-an ang mga tawo,” she said.
She also shared that she has not spoken with the former village chief since the May 12 midterm elections.
“Wala kami kabalo kung diin siya subong,” she added.
