Bacolod reallocates market rehab funds

BACOLOD CITY — Mayor Alfredo “Albee” Benitez announced that the funds initially allocated for the renovation of the Burgos Public Market will be redirected to other projects that have a significant impact on the people of Bacolod.

The city government canceled its plan to renovate the market after vendors expressed opposition due to concerns about their livelihoods.

“There are people who do not like change. It’s hard to help those who do not appreciate it,” Benitez said.

Benitez explained that the opposition stemmed from fears about the impact on livelihoods from the start of construction to its completion.

“Because of that fear and concern, they are not willing to build better,” he added.

The city had allocated P525 million for the renovation of the Burgos Public Market. This amount is part of the P4.4 billion approved loan from the Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP).

Benitez mentioned that there are several markets where the funds can be utilized. He indicated that the renovation of the Libertad and Central Markets are among the projects under consideration.

“We are also looking at it. I’m getting feelers from other markets that they are willing,” the mayor said.

He also noted that the funds could be transferred to other projects that would benefit the general public.

“Whoever wants it, I’d rather give it to them,” he said.
