BACOLOD CITY – Mayor Greg Gasataya has ordered the facelift of the Bacolod Public Plaza in response to calls from residents to restore its lost glory.
In a weekend press statement, Gasataya said the public’s concerns are being addressed “one day, one sweep, one truckload of waste at a time.”
Now on its third day, the city-led cleanup drive is steadily transforming the downtown plaza, turning public clamor into visible action, the statement said.
Teams from the General Services Office, City Engineer’s Office, and other departments are clearing trash, overgrowth and visual blight from the historic site.
“The people have spoken, and we are acting on it,” Gasataya said.
“Our plaza is more than just a park; it is where Bacolodnons gather, rest and celebrate,” he added.
“We will bring back its dignity, safety and beauty for everyone to enjoy.”
Photos from the cleanup show cleared walkways, revived greenery and a plaza reclaiming its welcoming atmosphere for families, students and senior citizens.
Gasataya said the city will continue cleanup efforts in the coming days to ensure the Bacolod Public Plaza remains a clean, safe and vibrant community space.
He said the initiative is part of a broader campaign for cleaner, safer public areas across Bacolod, reflecting the belief that a well-kept city mirrors the pride and discipline of its people.
Gasataya also ordered the flushing of the city’s three major public markets: Libertad, Central and Burgos.
He said vendors voluntarily joined the flushing operation Sunday night at Burgos Market, sweeping, scrubbing and helping without being asked.
“This is what it means to be stronger together—becoming part of change instead of waiting for it,” he said.
“Instead of pointing fingers, they offered help.”
Meanwhile, one of the first business groups to pay a courtesy visit to Gasataya during his first week in office was Megaworld Corp.
Top executives led by President and CEO Lourdes Gutierrez-Alfonso visited the mayor on July 4 at the Bacolod City Government Center.
The delegation included Jericho Barcelon, head of project development and partnerships; Harold Geronimo, head of PR and media affairs; and executives from Megaworld Lifestyle Malls, The Upper East Township, Premier Offices and Hotels and Resorts.
During the meeting, Geronimo affirmed Megaworld’s commitment to partnering with Bacolod for urban development and tourism growth.
The company also highlighted its major investments in the city, including one of its largest township and industrial estate projects.
Gasataya welcomed the group and reaffirmed the city’s support for collaborations that promote economic development and tourism innovation.
