BACOLOD CITY — The city government marked the 84th Araw ng Kagitingan on Thursday, highlighting the bravery and resilience of Filipinos amid the oil crisis linked to ongoing tensions in the Middle East.
Mayor Greg Gasataya said the spirit of heroism continues to manifest in everyday life.
“Ang giting o ang tapang ay ipinapakita natin araw-araw sa ating pagbangon, sa kabila ng fuel crisis na ating hinaharap,” Gasataya said in his message.
He cited the ongoing distribution of fuel subsidies to tricycle drivers to help ease the burden on the transport sector.
“Ang patuloy na pagtatrabaho ng mga empleyado, serbisyo ng transport sector, pag-aaral ng mga estudyante, at suporta ng ating mga negosyante ay patunay ng giting at tapang ng mga Bacolodnon,” he said.
With the theme “Giting ng Bayani, Pamana sa Salinlahi,” Gasataya and Brig. Gen. Ted Dumosmog, commander of the Philippine Army’s 303rd Infantry Brigade, offered flowers and paid tribute to Filipino heroes and veterans whose legacy continues to inspire future generations during rites at the Bacolod City Government Center grounds.
Other government officials also stressed the importance of remembering the bravery of Filipino soldiers and drawing inspiration from their sacrifices in facing present-day challenges.
The ceremony also featured an interpretative dance presentation and concluded with a community singing of “Pilipinas Kong Mahal,” reinforcing nationalism and unity.
Meanwhile, Bacolod Rep. Alfredo “Albee” Benitez also honored the brave Filipinos who gave their lives for the country.
“As we celebrate Araw ng Kagitingan, may their courage inspire us to stand firm in the face of challenges and to continue working together for a better future for our people and our nation,” he said in a statement.
Police Brig. Gen. Arnold Thomas Ibay, director of the Police Regional Office–Negros Island Region, said in a statement that the courage of the nation’s heroes remains a reminder that, even in difficult times, the strength of the Filipino spirit shines through.
“As we go about our daily lives, may we carry their legacy by showing kindness, unity, and love for our country in our own simple ways. Let us continue to stand together and keep the spirit of heroism alive every day,” he said.
