BACOLOD CITY – A 20-year-old resident of Barangay Sum-ag has died of leptospirosis, bringing the city’s total deaths to six this year, according to the City Health Office.
The patient had reportedly waded in river water less than a week before developing symptoms.
He initially experienced fever, joint pain, vomiting and nausea, and was prescribed medication after a medical consultation.
Although some symptoms subsided, he continued to suffer from recurring headaches and intermittent fever.
Two days before hospitalization, he developed diarrhea with vomiting but remained ambulatory.
He was admitted to a hospital on June 8 and died the next day due to moderate leptospirosis.
According to the CHO, he was diagnosed with kidney injury secondary to multiple electrolyte imbalances.
As of June 14, Bacolod has recorded 12 leptospirosis cases, a 50 percent increase from last year’s eight cases over the same period.
Two cases each were reported in Barangays Handumanan and Banago.
One case each was also recorded in Barangays 12, 21, Estefania, Mansilingan, Bata, Villamonte, Sum-ag and Felisa.
