BACOLOD CITY — A total of 26,105 kilograms of waste, equivalent to three full garbage trucks, was removed from Mambuloc Creek on Thursday as part of the intensive cleanup drive launched by the new administration.
The massive waste haul prompted Bacolod City Mayor Greg Gasataya to issue an urgent call for public cooperation.
The bulk of the collected debris consisted of household waste and plastic materials.
The cleanup is part of the city’s flood mitigation efforts targeting flood-prone areas, including Barangays 2, 8 and 10.
Gasataya, who personally supervised Thursday’s initial dredging operations, emphasized that community cooperation is vital to achieving long-term results.
He said that while the city can implement engineering solutions, lasting change requires active public participation.
Gasataya reiterated that flooding will persist if residents continue dumping garbage into waterways.
“We can clean this today, but if people keep throwing trash, nothing will change. Cooperation is key,” he stressed.
Following the initial clearing, the city plans to install catch nets and other reinforcements to help maintain the cleanliness of the creek.
Gasataya urged residents to take part in protecting the environment, stressing that maintaining clean waterways is a shared responsibility.
Meanwhile, the City Legal Office Enforcement Unit, led by City Legal Officer Karol Joseph Chiu and Executive Assistant Retired Col. Levy Pangue, cleared about 10 structures obstructing access to the Sangguniang Kabataan Federation Office of Barangay 16 earlier this week.
Among the structures dismantled was a makeshift auto repair shop that had been blocking the entrance to the SK office.
Five-day notices were issued prior to the clearing, which was carried out in coordination with personnel from the City Engineer’s Office, Office of the Building Official, Bacolod Traffic and Transportation Management Department, and several barangay officials.
With cooperation from the involved parties, the clearing operations were carried out peacefully, restoring safe access to the area for the youth and the community.
“This is part of our ongoing effort to ensure public spaces are clear and accessible for everyone,” said Pangue.
He added that the next phase would include coordination with the BTTMD to clear additional traffic obstructions in the area to improve mobility and safety.
The City Legal Office and its enforcement team continue to appeal for public cooperation as Bacolod intensifies its campaign to reclaim public spaces for the benefit of all residents.
