Bacolod cop hurt in brass-knuckle attack honored

BACOLOD CITY — The Police Regional Office-Negros Island Region (PRO-NIR) has recognized the courage and unwavering devotion to duty of a police officer who was allegedly assaulted by a high school student in front of a public high school in Barangay Granada on Aug. 14.

Police Col. Lito Patay, deputy regional director for operations of PRO-NIR, recently conferred the Medalya ng Papuri on Police Master Sgt. Jonathan Panisa of Police Station 5 in recognition of his exemplary efficiency, courageous intervention, and commitment to public safety.

Panisa, 40, was conducting an intelligence operation in civilian clothes in the area when he intervened after observing a group of youngsters allegedly skateboarding recklessly and repeatedly crossing the roadway amid heavy vehicular traffic, posing a risk to students, motorists, and other road users.

While performing his duty and admonishing the individuals to prevent further obstruction and ensure public safety, Panisa was allegedly struck in the face with brass knuckles by one of the individuals, causing an injury below his left eye.

Despite the incident, Panisa’s intervention demonstrated professional competence, alertness, and a strong commitment to protecting lives and preserving peace and order, according to PRO-NIR.

His actions reflected the dedication expected of police officers who remain ready to act whenever public safety is at risk, PRO-NIR added.

In a statement, Police Brig. Gen. Romano Cardiño, PRO-NIR director, said the award is their way of saying that Panisa’s dedication is seen, valued, and appreciated.

“He did what we expect from a police officer—he stepped forward when others needed protection. His courage in performing his duty, despite the risk to his own safety, deserves our recognition and respect,” Cardiño added.

Meanwhile, the 16-year-old Grade 11 student surrendered to authorities hours after the incident and acknowledged the mistake he had committed.

Police said the teenager was later turned over to the appropriate social welfare authorities for proper disposition.
