The average increase in COVID-19 cases in Iloilo City climbed to 119 per day in the first week of June 2021.
From June 1 to June 4, Iloilo City recorded 476 cases or an average of 119 cases per day, based on the data from the City Epidemiological Surveillance Unit (CESU). This is almost 500% higher compared to 84 cases recorded on May 1 to May 4.
On June 1, the city logged 109 additional cases, followed by 124 new cases on June 2, and 118 cases on June 3. The metro logged its highest number of new cases in a day on June 4 with 125.
Meanwhile, the city recorded 119 cases on Saturday, including 11 City Hall employees.
As of 12 noon on Sunday, the CESU reported 49 new additional cases.
The surge in cases in Iloilo City continues despite the imposition of modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ) which will last until June 15, 2021.
The consistent rise of cases in the metro has prompted authorities to re-impose additional restrictions initially implemented last year when the pandemic started like the quarantine pass policy and border restrictions.
Despite this, the total active cases in the city neared the 2,000-mark with 1,982 total active cases as of June 6, including 214 deaths.
Meanwhile, Mayor Jerry Treñas has appealed for the cooperation of the public as he stressed that governance is a shared responsibility.
“The city can only suggest protocols for everyone. It is up to our constituents to follow and comply. We cannot be with you all the time. Ultimately, as I have always said, governance is a shared responsibility. We all know the hospitals are full and ventilators are fully used. We really have to take care of ourselves so that we avoid getting infected during these times,” he said in a statement on Saturday. (ERS)
