Arbole, Gialon headline ICTSI Iloilo golf showdown

Fresh off a career-defining breakthrough in Negros, Art Arbole brings newfound confidence to Iloilo as he chases back-to-back Philippine Golf Tour titles against a deep field led by former Iloilo champion Zanieboy Gialon.

The ICTSI Iloilo Golf Challenge tees off Sept. 29 at the Iloilo Golf and Country Club, with PHP 2.5 million at stake in the seventh leg of this year’s Philippine Golf Tour organized by Pilipinas Golf Tournaments Inc.

For Arbole, the Iloilo stop offers an immediate test of whether his breakthrough at the ICTSI Negros Occidental Classic can become the start of a sustained run rather than a one-week peak.

For Gialon, the tournament represents a return to the venue where he last won on Tour, giving the 37-year-old Davao del Sur native another chance to end a two-year title drought.

Arbole enters Iloilo after finally ending a 14-year wait for his first professional title with a dramatic victory in Negros Occidental.

“Cloud 9 pa rin ang pakiramdam ko. Yung confidence ko mas tumaas kasi dati parang may takot ako na wala pa ding mangyayari sa laro ko,” said Arbole, who produced one of the most complete performances of his career at Marapara.

The Del Monte native, who is now based in Canlubang, had surrendered a one-stroke lead and fallen three shots behind former Order of Merit winner Jhonnel Ababa before mounting his comeback.

Arbole responded with a birdie barrage starting at No. 9 to regain control of the tournament.

He then held off Jeffren Lumbo in a tense closing duel to secure his first PGT championship.

Arbole’s driving, iron play, woods and putting all held up under pressure, giving him confidence that his game can travel to another demanding layout.

“Sana dito sa Iloilo, maging maganda pa din ang ipakita ko,” he said.

The Iloilo Golf and Country Club, formerly known as the Santa Barbara layout, presents a different challenge even if its tight and tricky character bears similarities to Marapara.

Doglegs, hazards and narrow landing areas are expected to place a premium on precision, course management and patience, particularly when birdie opportunities become scarce.

Arbole will also arrive with a bigger target on his back after his breakthrough win.

Among those trying to stop his bid for consecutive titles are Ababa, Tony Lascuña, Clyde Mondilla, Rupert Zaragosa, Reymon Jaraula, Guido van der Valk, Lumbo and Gialon.

Gialon returns to Iloilo with particularly strong memories after dominating the last Iloilo Challenge in 2024.

He ended another two-year title drought that week and won by six strokes over Angelo Que and Ira Alido at the course then known as Santa Barbara.

Two years later, Gialon again finds himself within striking distance of another title but still searching for the victory that has eluded him since that Iloilo triumph.

His latest result suggests he may be close.

Gialon finished solo fourth in last week’s ICTSI Negros Occidental Classic, remaining in contention deep into the final round after shooting a two-under 33 on the front nine.

He closed with a 35 for a 68 and finished three strokes behind Arbole.

The fourth-place finish followed another Top 5 performance at Caliraya Springs, where Gialon recorded his 2022 victory.

His other results this season have included a missed cut at Lakewood, a tie for 15th at Pinewoods, a joint 15th at Pradera and a share of 24th at Summit Point.

Iloilo’s tight layout could suit Gialon, whose previous success on the course showed his ability to negotiate its doglegs and hazards while knowing when to attack and when to play conservatively.

Que is another major threat as the reigning Order of Merit champion pursues his third victory of the season and a bid for back-to-back OOM crowns.

The three-time Asian Tour winner has already won at Caliraya and Summit Point this season.

The two source releases differ slightly on Que’s Negros finish, with one listing him joint 13th and the other describing him as joint 12th.

Que had entered Negros after competing in Taiwan, leaving him with limited time to practice and reacquaint himself with Marapara.

A full week of rest and preparation could make him a bigger factor in Iloilo.

Ababa also arrives motivated after fading late against Arbole in Negros and settling for third place.

The result extended Ababa’s title drought to two years.

Lumbo, meanwhile, will attempt to build on his runner-up finish behind Arbole.

The young campaigner won his breakthrough PGT title at South Pacific last year after outdueling Russell Bautista in a dramatic five-hole playoff.

The field is further strengthened by Bautista, Collin Wheeler, Michael Bibat, Dino Villanueva, Ryan Monsalve, Gabriel Manotoc, Arnold Villacencio, Elee Bisera, Kim Tae Soo, Nilo Salahog, Jay Bayron, Mars Pucay and Gerald Rosales.

Proven winners Mondilla, Lascuña, Zaragosa, van der Valk and Jaraula add another layer of difficulty to a tournament where course management could matter as much as raw scoring ability.

For Arbole, Iloilo is the first opportunity to prove his Negros victory was the start of something bigger.

For Gialon, it is a return to the place where he last lifted a PGT trophy and another chance to rediscover the winning form he showed there two years ago.
