Anti-illegal fishing operations net 35, seize PHP 5.39 million gear

ILOILO CITY — Thirty-five people were arrested in Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6) operations against illegal fishing over the weekend.

Conducted on Sept. 12 and 13, the 21 anti-illegal fishing operations also resulted in the confiscation of around PHP 5.39 million worth of fishing equipment and other items.

The Iloilo Police Provincial Office (IPPO) recorded the highest number of operations with 13, resulting in the arrest of 22 individuals and the confiscation of items valued at about PHP 4.68 million.

Meanwhile, Antique police conducted seven operations that led to seven arrests and the recovery of items estimated at PHP 287,940.

In Capiz, a targeted operation in waters off Panay resulted in the arrest of six individuals and the confiscation of fishing equipment and other items valued at approximately PHP 430,000.

PRO-6 Regional Director Brig. Gen. Randulf Tuaño said the campaign is intended to protect the livelihoods of legitimate fishers while helping preserve the region’s marine resources.

“Protecting our marine resources is also protecting the families and communities that depend on them. We will remain consistent in enforcing the law and will continue working with legitimate fishers to keep our waters productive and sustainable,” Tuaño said.

PRO-6 urged the public, particularly those engaged in fishing, to observe existing fishing regulations, secure the necessary permits, and use only lawful fishing methods and equipment.

Residents were also encouraged to report suspected illegal fishing activities to the nearest police unit or appropriate authorities.

Republic Act 10654, which amended the Philippine Fisheries Code of 1998, strengthened measures against illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing and provides penalties that may include fines and confiscation of catches and fishing gear.
