Animal groups seek probe into dog killing in Iloilo City pound

Animal welfare groups in Iloilo City are calling for action on reports of a dog’s alleged killing and theft of dog food at the Iloilo City Pound and Animal Shelter (ICPAS).

In an open letter addressed to Mayor Jerry Treñas and OIC City Veterinarian Dr. Fernando J. Abulencia, the groups called for a thorough investigation into the matter.

“We urge the City Government of Iloilo to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the reported inhumane killing of impounded dogs and the theft of dog food at the city pound, as detailed by a witness. We strongly condemn the cruelty demonstrated by the suspects involved and advocate for their immediate dismissal and prosecution for their actions.”

In response, Mayor Treñas ordered Dr. Abulencia to submit a detailed written report on the incident immediately.

“These cannot be allowed to happen under my watch as mayor of the city,” he said in a statement.

Earlier, Iloilo City Councilor Ely Estante confirmed the presence of a witness to the alleged dog killing.

According to the councilor, the witness, who was within three to five meters distance, recounted observing two ICPAS employees capturing the dog, which was then placed in a sack.

The witness reported that the dog stopped struggling shortly after being captured. However, the witness was unable to determine where the dog was buried.

This incident has sparked a unified plea from various organizations, including TAIL, TRI, FURRY FRIENDS SECOND CHANCE, PAW PANTRY MISSION, Goygoy and Friends, Cupid Care, Tatap Strays, Ilonggo Puspins, and Delgado Animal Day Care Center.
