After countless tries in the Olympics, Germany finally has one singles gold medal in the men’s lawn tennis.
Alexander Zverev fought with determination and confidence to do just that and dominated Karen Khachanov of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1 to claim Olympic glory.
Fresh off his stunning come-from-behind victory against world No. 1 Novak Djokovic of Serbia, 1-6, 6-3, 6-1, Zverev proved that his win was not a fluke and was just too much for Khachanov to handle.
The German tennis star was still consistent with his heavy baseline game and made it look easy as he piled up his forehand winners in two sets.
Khachanov attempted to give different looks for Zverev but the world No. 5 ranked player kept on hitting in the right spots and there was just nothing the representative from ROC could do.
Zverev’s tremendous net play and defense was also one of the biggest stories of the match as he just closed the distance and negated Khachanov to put the pressure moving forward.
The win is also the first-ever Olympic gold medal for Zverev and topped his amazing run in Tokyo with just one set dropped since the elimination round.
