Filipina tennis ace Alex Eala is set to make her main draw debut at the French Open against Colombia’s Emiliana Arango on Sunday (Philippine time).
The 19-year-old Eala recently achieved her career-best Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) singles ranking at 69, cementing her rise as one of Asia’s top young players on the tour.
She will face Arango, 24, who currently sits at world no. 88, in the opening round of the Roland Garros women’s singles competition.
This marks Eala’s first time playing in the main draw of the French Open, following her third-round exit in last year’s qualifying stage.
“I’m just excited to finally play on the big stage here,” Eala said in an earlier interview. “It’s always been a dream to compete in the Grand Slam main draws.”
Eala is no stranger to Roland Garros, having lifted the girls’ doubles trophy in 2021 alongside Russian partner Oksana Selekhmeteva.
Since turning professional, Eala has steadily climbed the WTA rankings, drawing international attention after a historic semifinal run at the Miami Open in March.
That tournament saw her defeat high-profile opponents, including former U.S. Open finalist Madison Keys and world no. 1 Iga Swiatek, before falling to American star Jessica Pegula in the semifinals.
Her breakthrough in Miami marked the first time a Southeast Asian player reached the semifinals of a WTA 1000 event in more than a decade.
“She’s playing with so much maturity now,” Pegula said after their match. “You can see how hungry she is.”
Eala also competed in the Madrid Open but exited early after a rematch with Swiatek in the round of 64.
Most recently, she joined forces with American phenom Coco Gauff in the Italian Open doubles draw, where the pair reached the quarterfinals.
The partnership was well-received by fans, with Gauff praising Eala’s “calm and smart court sense.”
Born in Quezon City and based in Spain for training, Eala is a product of the Rafael Nadal Academy and has won two International Tennis Federation (ITF) titles since turning pro in 2020.
She also made history as the first Filipino to win a junior Grand Slam singles title when she captured the 2022 US Open girls’ crown.
The French Open offers a total prize pool of around PHP 2.5 billion (€53.5 million), with first-round singles losers taking home roughly PHP 3.2 million (€73,000).
Eala’s inclusion in the draw marks another milestone for Philippine tennis, which has not had a female player in a Grand Slam main draw since 1991.
“She’s inspiring a whole new generation of Filipinos,” said Philippine Tennis Association president Antonio Cablitas. “What she’s doing for our sport cannot be overstated.”
If she wins against Arango, Eala could face a seeded player in the second round, making every match a crucial step toward another historic run.
The Philippine tennis community will be watching closely as Eala continues her rise on the global stage, now under the clay-court spotlight of Roland Garros.
