As climate change intensifies, coastal communities remain at the forefront of its impacts — with stronger storms and unpredictable weather threatening both lives and livelihoods.
Sustainable development and community resilience strategies are critical to overcoming these challenges.
In 2015, the Alegria Barangay Council signed a memorandum of agreement with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources to implement the Mangrove and Beach Forest Development Project.
The initiative aims to rehabilitate and develop mangrove and beach forests across 100 hectares of disaster-prone areas in the community.
The MBFDP offers a comprehensive approach to strengthening natural coastal barriers against the effects of climate change.
Two key mangrove species — Rhizophora apiculata (bakhaw-lalaki) and Rhizophora mucronata (bakhaw-babae) — were planted as part of the project.
The project has brought multiple benefits to the community.
It enhances environmental protection by serving as a natural buffer against storm surges, tsunamis, and coastal erosion, while restoring biodiversity and increasing climate resilience.
It creates livelihood opportunities by employing residents in nursery establishment, planting, and monitoring activities.
It reduces disaster risks by minimizing the impact of typhoons and protecting homes and infrastructure.
It adds aesthetic value by drawing visitors for recreation, photography, and ecotourism.
The success of the MBFDP highlights how community-led initiatives can effectively address environmental threats while improving local livelihoods. (DENR)
