Carlos Alcaraz shrugged off an early 0-1 deficit and scored a reverse sweep- 6.7, 6.3, 6.4, 6.4- to claim an early quarterfinal ticket in the ongoing Wimbledon Grand Slam tournament on July 7, 2025, in London.
After a shaky start clouded with unforced errors and uncharacteristic decision-making, Alcaraz made it up in the last three sets and added Rublev to his list of victims after eliminating Fabio Fognini, Oliver Tarvet, and Jan-Lennard Struff.
It was a highly entertaining opener as the world No. 14 Rublev out-pointed Alcaraz during the deciding tiebreaker. With the score deadlocked at 4-all, the Russian ace weathered the storm with a 3-1 scoring run to gain the early momentum with a 1-0 lead.
Rublev provided answers to Alcaraz’s unpredictable groundstroke variation, countering back with a deep slice whenever the defending champion sent a barrage of flat forehands.
During the stretch when Alcaraz switched to top spin with hopes of catching him off guard, Rublev didn’t bite into the trap and calmly pushed the Spanish stalwart away with wide backhand shots.
Whatever Alcaraz wanted, Rublev neutralized them all. The options became limited every time match point neared, and the reigning king knew he had to do something to activate the switch he once did against Fognini during their grueling five-set encounter.
Alcaraz kicked off the second set with a huge service performance, holding all of his serves while mixing his offensive pattern with serve-and-volley techniques.
It was reminiscent of his tactic against Tarvet, where he overwhelmed the challenger with his lateral quickness inside, backstopped by his insane reflexes.
Those net points steered Alcaraz back into the match and officially leveled the Round of 16 clash with back-to-back down-the-line forehand bombs.
Once Alcaraz settled in and got the feel of the grass surface, there was just nothing that Rublev could do as he turned from the aggressor to a conservative defensive backline.
All the aggressive forehands that forced the issues evaporated, and Alcaraz just smelled blood in the fourth and final set, capping off the win with a run-down clinic in front of his fans.
With the win, Alcaraz will have only a day to regroup as he is set to prepare against Cameron Norrie who took out Nicolas Jarry in one of the most explosive matches during the Round of 16 stage.
