Carlos Alcaraz finally settled in on the grass surface and handed United Kingdom’s Oliver Tarvet a harsh reality check- 6.1, 6.4, 6.4- during their second-round encounter in the ongoing Wimbledon Grand Slam tournament on July 2, 2025, in London.
After a thrilling five-set escape against veteran Fabio Fognini in the first round, Alcaraz took those learning curves and straightened them in his match against Tarvet, resulting in a lopsided win.
Slow starts were no longer in Alcaraz’s memo as he quickly stomped over Tarvet in the first three game sets of the opener with laser-sharp forehand bombs that kissed the right baseline at will.
From an error-plagued performance against Fognini, Alcaraz finally entered his most fluid state and weaved his magic around the bright grass of the Centre Court.
The court mastery absolutely went missing in the first round, but Alcaraz picked up the slack and dictated the tempo that he desired in all three sets, forcing Tarvet on his heels everytime they engaged in several baseline rally exchanges.
Alcaraz did his thing at will and even unleashed his risky serve-and-volley technique midway through the second set.
Determined to pay off his high risk, Alcaraz converted six smashes out of his eight trips to the net, a testament to his confidence and decisiveness.
Tarvet tried to be creative in the third and final set after giving Alcaraz a dose of his own medicine at the net area. That move favored the British ace as he was able to inch close and nearly scored a break point in the fourth game set but the reigning champion denied any comeback attempts by reverting to his baseline attack.
Alcaraz stopped attacking to the net, and flat-out bullied Tarvet with his backhand strokes that were unmatched in terms of power.
The beauty of the drop shot killed Tarvet’s chances in the final two game sets as Alcaraz tallied three markers that moved him to match point.
Needing a point to seal the deal and advance to the third round, Alcaraz sent in a booming serve that Tarvet failed to return which officially kept his hopes of a back-to-back title at Wimbledon alive.
