Aklan teacher dies days after teenager’s assault

KALIBO, Aklan — A teacher from New Washington, Aklan, died two days after he was repeatedly punched by a 19-year-old man, local police confirmed.

The 52-year-old victim, a resident of Poblacion, Kalibo, died while undergoing treatment at Asia Pacific Medical Center-Aklan in Kalibo.

Maj. Dandy Gonzalodo, chief of the New Washington Municipal Police Station, said the victim’s family informed police of his death on the afternoon of July 28.

The victim was taken to the hospital after he figured in a fight with the young suspect on the evening of July 26.

The victim attended an advance graduation party in Barangay Mabilo, New Washington, where a friend had been invited.

The suspect, also a resident of Barangay Mabilo, was invited to the same gathering.

Gonzalodo said the two knew each other but were not personally acquainted.

They had no previous conflict.

Police said the two had an argument while they were under the influence of alcohol.

The host later decided to take the teacher home.

As the teacher boarded a motorcycle, the suspect allegedly ran after him and threw a barrage of punches until he fell onto the pavement.

The victim was rushed to the hospital and admitted to the intensive care unit.

Gonzalodo said authorities had yet to determine the victim’s cause of death.

The victim’s family requested an autopsy.

The suspect was arrested immediately after the incident.

A complaint for frustrated murder was filed against him during an inquest proceeding on July 28.

Gonzalodo said police would make the necessary adjustments to the complaint following the victim’s death.
