KALIBO, Aklan — The Aklan Police Provincial Office helped advance the Police Regional Office 6 campaign against loose firearms by securing the participation of all barangays in the province.
Records showed that Aklan’s 327 barangays turned over or facilitated the surrender of 344 assorted firearms.
As in other areas of Western Visayas, most of the surrendered firearms were homemade.
PRO 6 Director Brig. Gen. Randulf Tuaño presented a plaque of appreciation to Gov. Jose Enrique “Joen” Miraflores during a ceremony Thursday, Oct. 22, at the Aklan Police Provincial Office headquarters at Camp Pastor Martelino in Kalibo.
Plaques were also presented to Rep. Jesus “Jess” Marquez of Aklan’s 1st District, Rep. Florencio “Joeben” Miraflores of the 2nd District, and the mayors of the province’s 17 municipalities.
Tuaño recognized Aklan officials for their support of Project RTT 3389, or Restrict, Track, and Turn-In, a PRO 6 initiative aimed at strengthening firearms accountability and encouraging the voluntary surrender of loose firearms across Western Visayas’ 3,389 barangays.
The campaign also relies on cooperation among the police, local governments, barangay officials, and communities to reduce the number of unlicensed firearms in circulation.
Gov. Miraflores, who concurrently chairs the Regional Development Council in Western Visayas, lauded the PRO 6 campaign and said the drive against loose firearms supports the government’s peace and order efforts.
“And a stable peace and order buoyed the region’s sustainable growth,” he noted.
Miraflores said businesses are more confident when peace and order in the region remains stable and secure.
