A’ja Wilson becomes 1st player in WNBA history to reach 1k points in a single season

Las Vegas Aces’ superstar A’ja Wilson continued her magical Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) season after making history on September 16, 2024.

After surpassing Jewell Loyd’s record for the single-season scoring feat, the versatile frontcourt force doubled her celebration when she became the first player in WNBA history to score 1,000 points in a season.

With only two minutes remaining in their game against the Connecticut Sun, Wilson cashed in an elbow jump shot to formally claim the WNBA record.

Not only did she rewrite the WNBA history book but she also led Las Vegas to a lopsided 84-71 victory against the no. 2 team in the Eastern Conference.

In 35 minutes of playing time, the hefty leftie stuffed the stat sheets and top-scored her squad with 29 markers, nine rebounds, three assists, and two blocks.

After setting the new WNBA scoring record, Las Vegas called a timeout with only 30 seconds left in the game to give their flowers to Wilson.

It has been a majestic year for Wilson after also bagging the gold medal in the Paris Olympics, steering the USA National Women’s basketball team to its eighth straight title in the Global Games.

Wilson became the national team’s main gunner during that grand final against the resilient French team, dropping 21 points and 12 rebounds.

However, Wilson noted that her focus will still be the upcoming WNBA playoffs as the Aces look to formalize a home-court advantage if they win their remaining games against Seattle and Dallas.
