More than 200 health care professionals from across the Philippines gathered in Kalibo, Aklan, for the 31st Annual Scientific Meeting of the American College of Chest Physicians Philippine Delegation, held at the upscale Marzon Hotel.
With the theme “AKLAN: Advancing Knowledge in Lung Care Through Innovations,” the conference provided a venue for learning, collaboration, and innovation in respiratory health care.
The event was led by Dr. Fel Angelie Colon, president of the ACCP Philippine Delegation, together with Dr. Eileen Aniceto, overall chairperson, and Dr. Lalaine Montera, chairperson of the Scientific Committee.
The keynote address was delivered virtually by Dr. Neil S. Freedman, the 88th president of the American College of Chest Physicians, who was introduced by Dr. Liza Garcia, global governor of ACCP, while Aklan 2nd District Rep. Florencio Miraflores welcomed delegates during the opening ceremonies.
Scientific sessions featured updates on smoking cessation, asthma and COPD management, tuberculosis control, sleep disorders, pulmonary rehabilitation, critical care medicine, and early lung cancer detection.
A well-attended inhaler workshop was facilitated by Dr. Eileen Aniceto, with Dr. Rollin Tabuena and Dr. Juliet Macahilas serving as workshop facilitators.
Experts, including Dr. Camilo Roa Jr. and Dr. Jennifer Ann Wi, discussed advances in tuberculosis control, while Dr. Dina Diaz presented pulmonary considerations in diving and drowning.
Beyond the scientific sessions, delegates enjoyed a vibrant Mardi Gras-themed fellowship night at Café Latte, showcasing Aklan’s rich culture through the rhythmic beats of Ati-atihan performers, live music, and fellowship among participants.
One of the highlights of the evening was a special dance performance by Dr. Rollin Tabuena, one of the renowned “Dancing Doctors of Iloilo,” whose energetic presentation delighted the audience and added excitement to the celebration.
The conference concluded with a renewed commitment to innovation, education, and collaboration in advancing lung health.
In his closing remarks, Dr. Glen Refre emphasized the importance of continuous learning and teamwork in improving respiratory health care services throughout the country.
As the conference concluded, the CHEST Philippine Delegation renewed its commitment to advancing lung health across the country by harnessing the expertise, education, and resources of CHEST to create healthier communities and a brighter future for all Filipinos.
