783 Aklan TUPAD workers receive nearly PHP 19 million
By Jennifer P. Rendon
ILOILO CITY — Nearly PHP 19 million in Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers (TUPAD) assistance provided temporary employment to 783 beneficiaries across nine municipalities in Aklan.
The Department of Labor and Employment Region 6 (DOLE-6) said the program helped beneficiaries earn income while addressing pressing needs in their communities.
TUPAD is DOLE’s emergency employment program for disadvantaged, displaced and underemployed workers.
Implemented by DOLE-6 through the DOLE Aklan Field Office, the program covered beneficiaries from Ibajay, Batan, Buruanga, Malinao, Tangalan, Numancia, New Washington, Nabas and Malay.
The beneficiaries worked on various community projects from Aug. 20 to Sept. 19, 2026.
In a statement, DOLE-6 said beneficiaries cleared and desilted canals to improve water flow.
They also installed water distribution pipelines to provide more reliable water connections in their communities, particularly to rice fields.
Jerry Salazar, a farmer for 30 years from Barangay Bagacay in Ibajay, was among the TUPAD beneficiaries assigned to clean an irrigation system.
Salazar said the work benefited the community by allowing water to flow more efficiently to rice fields and helping sustain farmers’ livelihoods.
Meanwhile, Imelda Samar of Buruanga said the TUPAD program helped clean and rehabilitate rivers and waterways.
She said the work improved water flow and benefited not only their community but also nearby barangays.
DOLE-6 said beneficiaries were also involved in the reopening, rehabilitation, repair and maintenance of community facilities.
These projects included the rehabilitation of Barangay Disaster Risk Reduction and Management offices.
