6-year-old girl drowns at Negros Occidental beach resort

BACOLOD CITY — A 6-year-old girl drowned at a beach resort in Barangay Gargato, Hinigaran, Negros Occidental, on Friday while swimming with her siblings and neighbors.
The victim’s older sister told police that the children went swimming at the beach resort with another sibling and two minor neighbors.
Upon arriving at the resort, the group headed to the seashore.
Police said the girl went near the shoreline, accidentally stepped into a deeper part of the water and was unable to withstand the waves.
Her companions attempted to rescue her but were unsuccessful.
A police officer and beachgoers pulled the girl from the water and sought help from the town’s rescue team.
She was taken to a hospital, where she was declared dead.
Hinigaran is one of 19 municipalities in Negros Occidental, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority.
