55 law enforcers complete Boracay IED security training

BORACAY ISLAND, Aklan — Philippine National Police chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. led the closing ceremony Friday, July 31, for an improvised explosive device threat and security symposium on the resort island.
The four-day symposium, held from July 28 to 31, brought together 55 personnel from the PNP and other law enforcement and government agencies.
Participants included representatives from the Bureau of Customs, Philippine Coast Guard, Philippine Air Force, Anti-Money Laundering Council, and National Intelligence Coordinating Agency.
Police Regional Office 6 said “foreign counterparts” also attended the symposium and shared their areas of expertise.
The training focused on strengthening participants’ technical skills in detecting, analyzing, and investigating explosive threats.
It was designed to improve security at major tourist destinations and key transportation hubs across the region.
Participants were trained to identify dangerous devices and respond appropriately to potential threats.
The symposium also sought to strengthen the capabilities of canine explosive detection units assigned to regional gateways.
Participants received training on properly handling and preserving evidence to help support the successful prosecution of offenders.
Brig. Gen. Randulf Tuaño, Western Visayas police director, said the symposium represented a proactive approach to potential threats being monitored by the PNP.
Tuaño also stressed the importance of cooperation between the PNP and other government agencies in effectively addressing security threats.
Improvised explosive devices are fabricated using destructive or incendiary materials and may be assembled from nonmilitary components, according to the United Nations.
The training was held in Boracay, one of the Philippines’ best-known tourism destinations and a major travel hub in Western Visayas.
Nartatez was formally appointed PNP chief in January 2026 after serving as acting chief beginning in September 2025.
