FORTY-ONE former rebels formally applied for amnesty during an activity organized by the Local Amnesty Board at Ibajay Complex in Poblacion, Ibajay, Aklan, on March 3.
The program, an initiative under the National Amnesty Commission, is part of the government’s continuing efforts to end local armed conflict and support lasting peace.
Among those who attended the activity were Prosecutor Flosemer Chris Gonzales, spokesperson of the Regional Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict in Western Visayas, and Regional State Prosecutor Louie Doligosa.
Also present was Lt. Col. Elmar Salvador, commanding officer of the 82nd Infantry (Bantay Laya) Battalion.
The Philippine Army’s 3rd Infantry Division said the amnesty program aims to give former rebels an opportunity to rebuild their lives, correct their paths and fully reintegrate into society by joining government programs and advocacies.
Authorities said they hope the initiative will strengthen community reintegration and give former combatants renewed hope for a better future.
Government officials reiterated their call for remaining members of armed groups to take advantage of the program and return to peaceful living with their families.
Meanwhile, 3rd Infantry Division commander Maj. Gen. Michael Samson commended the decision of the 41 former rebels to apply for amnesty.
He said it was a show of courage and a desire to embrace a new chapter in life.
“This program is about giving former rebels the chance to rebuild their lives, reunite with families, and contribute to nation-building,” Samson said.
He cited former rebels who chose peace and returned to the fold of the law, adding that the government is ready to support their reintegration.
Samson again urged those still in the mountains to lay down their arms, come home and help build a peaceful, prosperous future.
