BACOLOD City – Twenty-four persons were arrested by police for allegedly joining illegal cockfights in three areas of Negros Occidental last Sunday, a report from the Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office (Nocppo) said.
In Bago City, nine residents of Murcia town and a resident of Bacolod were arrested at Hacienda Quatro, Barangay Bacong, while their unidentified companions escaped after sensing the presence of police operatives in the area.
Police recovered from seven suspects P6,800 in bet money, gaffs, and other cockfighting paraphernalia.
In La Castellana town, three persons were apprehended at Sitio Candalaba, Barangay Cabacungan for allegedly holding a cockfighting activity without a permit.
Police confiscated from them P600 cash, one dead and one live fighting cock.
In Isabela town, nine residents of the town, one from Hinigaran town, and one from Binalbagan town were also collared at Sitio Cuyaoyao, Barangay Sebucawan.
Police recovered from them six fighting cocks, two gaffs, two scabbards, two leg bandages, and P480 cash.
The suspected gamblers will be charged for violation of the Presidential Decree No. 449 or the “Cockfighting Law of 1974”.
