ROXAS CITY, Capiz — Two people were killed and four others injured during the onslaught of Typhoon Tino on Monday, Nov. 3, as 49,401 families or 153,300 individuals were evacuated across the province.
One of the fatalities was identified as Spanky Beroco Idiosolo of Bacolod City, Negros Occidental, who was temporarily residing in Pontevedra for work.
He was reportedly standing beside his motorcycle while buying crabs at Sitio Hacienda, Barangay Sublangon, Pontevedra, when a tree suddenly fell and struck him on the head.
He was rushed to Bailan District Hospital but was declared dead on arrival due to fatal head injuries.
The second fatality, a farmer from Barangay San Ramon, Pilar, Capiz, was electrocuted while repairing his roof to prevent it from being blown away ahead of the typhoon’s landfall.
However, Atty. Shiella Artillero, head of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO), said the incident may not be directly related to the typhoon since it occurred before the storm hit Capiz.
“We have to assess and investigate whether it was related to the typhoon or not,” Artillero said.
The PDRRMO has yet to release the names of the injured victims.
Artillero said various government agencies have joined forces to provide aid to affected residents.
A total of 1,260 families or 3,248 individuals opted to stay outside evacuation centers, taking shelter in the homes of relatives.
Roughly 1,600 designated evacuation centers across Capiz were activated for the displaced families.
Local officials distributed food packs and medicines to evacuees.
Meanwhile, local government units, including Roxas City, announced the resumption of work and classes in all levels on Thursday, Nov. 6, after class suspensions were extended from Nov. 3 to 5 due to the storm.
Distribution of relief goods continued even during the height of Typhoon Tino’s impact.
Capiz Gov. Fredenil “Oto” Castro personally led the provincial government’s relief operations and supervised the distribution of family food packs to affected residents.
